Postdoctoral Position in Biological Oceanography/Marine Microbiology at Princeton University

The Department of Geosciences, Princeton University, is searching for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the biological oceanography/marine microbiology group. The position will be based at Princeton University and is available immediately. The initial appointment is available for one year, with a possibility of renewal for an additional year contingent upon satisfactory performance.

Applications are invited for research in the area of biological oceanography, focusing on elucidating the linkages among phytoplankton community composition, environmental factors and global change. The research spans two interdisciplinary NOAA/NSF-funded projects that integrate molecular biological investigation of phytoplankton assemblages (Bess Ward, Princeton University) with biogeochemical modeling (John Dunne, Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory). The focus of the postdoctoral research will be on the phytoplankton assemblage aspects, using high density DNA microarrays and metatranscriptomics to investigate the relative abundance and gene expression of eukaryotic phytoplankton. We are looking for a person who is interested in working in an interdisciplinary setting and willing to acquire new skills outside their main area of expertise.

A PhD in biology, microbiology, oceanography, or a related field is required.  Experience with molecular biological methods for the characterization of microbial communities and the associated bioinformatic and statistical analyses is required. Experience or interest in collaborating in the application of biogeochemical modeling is preferred.  Applicants should submit a most current cv, a brief statement of research interests (no more than 2 pages), publication list, and names and contact information for three references by applying on the Princeton University jobsite at https://jobs.princeton.edu/. Requisition #0110619.

Gondwana 14- East meets West

The story of Gondwana can be subdivided in three main periods: the amalgamation (heritage, terranes and thermotectonic events), the development (thermotectonic evolution, intracontinental basins, paleoclimate and active margins) and the break up (rifting processes, mantle plumes and paleogeography). To reflect this, the Conference will be divided in three parallel sessions: Gondwana Amalgamation; Gondwana Development and Gondwana Break Up, which will merge at the end of each day into one big conference session. Technical sessions will include oral and poster presentations over a period of five days, including a day off in the middle for local field trips, workshops and recreational activities. For more details visit the conference website http://www.gondwana14.org/

Young Earth-Scientists for Society Network (YES) Geomicrobiology Initiative

The YES Network is an international association of early-career geoscientists who are primarily under the age of 35 years and are from universities, geoscience organizations and companies from across the world. Over the last decade the interdisciplinary domain of Geobiology including geomicrobiology has generated plenty of interests among geologists, earth scientists and biologists. New discoveries in geomicrobiology has significantly changed the way we think about the origin and evolution of life on earth. YES Geomicrobiology is an initiative of YES Network to motivate early-career geoscientists to pursue research in geobiology and also encourage collaboration amongst geologists, geochemists microbiologists and environmental scientists. Through this platform ideas will be exchanged among YES Network members in areas of geobiology including geomicrobiology. Job openings/PhD positions/Meetings and workshops/grants applications relevant to the field of geomicrobiology will be posted on a regular basis. Opportunities for establishing long-term international research collaborative link amongst early career geoscientists will be actively explored from this platform.
